I think I’ve developed an unhealthy fascination with this scene. Like goddamn THATATTENTION TO DETAILS though. Kudos to the production team! The Southern Raiders was written by Elizabeth Welch Ehasz and directed by Joaquim Dos Santos.
A lot has been said about how Zuko deliberately angled his fall so that the first thing that will hit the floor would be hisbody, instead of Katara’s. But just look at how his hands were positioned all throughout this scene though. Given the suddenness of the attack and of being pushed away from the falling rocks (especially for Katara), it would have been understandable for his hands to graze a part of her body. Yet they didn’t.
When I first watched this scene, I thought that his hands grazed her upper body. Not for malicious reasons, but because under normal circumstances (ya know, physics), it would have been understandable even if they weren’t friends up to this point.
YET from the very start, his hands were grabbing his wrist while they were wrapped around her waist. And even after the fall and they settled, his hands still weren’t touching any part of her. When Katara asked ‘What are you doing?’, he moved his hand further and shifted his weight away from her.
You know, for girls who had been “accidentally” (read: nonconsensual, inappropriate) touched in both public and private spaces by those who feel entitled to our bodies (and our whole being!), this scene really means a lot.
Mad respect to the man who understands the concept of PERSONAL SPACE and respects it. Now, it just significantly changed my perspective of Zuko and his honor. He’s been consistent about it since Book 1. I have nothing but …
BASICALLY, ME TO ZUKO AND THE PRODUCTION TEAM:
(Side-note: More than a decade later and I’m still cackling because he could’ve gotten to Suki much faster and saved her instead, but nope, not Zuko. He had to get to Katara cos, ya know, they’re supposed to be just friends then mere acquaintances in the context of the comics, and this whole episode doesn’t really mean anything to their character arcs and relationship dynamics.)
I was thinking about what Bryke said
about Zutara fangirls growing up to have doomed relationships and I decided to
show how Zutara affected my relationship standards.
I want someone who empathizes with
my feelings:
I want someone who lets me see their vulnerable side:
I want someone who apologizes for
their past faults:
I want someone who involves
themselves with my family:
I want someone who allows me to feel
anger:
I want someone who goes out of their
way to reach out to me…
And continues to go out of their way
to make me feel better when I need it:
I want someone who gives me space to
take my own decisions and actions:
I want someone who opens up to me:
I want someone who trusts me and my
capacities:
I want someone who would be willing
to make sacrifices for me:
Most importantly, I want someone who
looks at me like this:
